E cosa puoi dirci in merito?

To start out, can you tell us how you got into djing and producing electronic music?

I grew up listening to the radio in Detroit, where by the time I was hitting puberty I had already been listening to Jeff Mills as The Wizard and The Electrifyin’ Mojo, where I first heard Cybotron and Model 500. On TV, The Scene was shifting from break dancing music to starting to incorporate the beginnings of house, where I heard songs like “Music Is the Key”, “Like This”, and “House Nation” when they were new.
When I was old enough to go clubbing, I read an article Dan Sicko wrote about the Music Institute, so I started going. People literally ran up the walls and did flips to this total abstract music. Going to a Kevin Saunderson “Brainstorm” party / rave where all these people were wearing UR T-Shirts, who were my favorite group at the time, led me to Record Time to buy that shirt. I eventually became import record buyer and met tons of people in the scene, the artists that really inspired me.  I started working on music but didn’t tell anyone until after I released my first record.

How do you define/describe the music you make and play?

I honestly feel it is for others to define. I work on what interests me, I play what fascinates me, and that takes many shapes from many places and eras. Ultimately you could say it is “Sound System Music”, but it is ultimately more cult than that. There is no genre in what I play. Yet is still a cohesive concept.

There is this argument over who mad the first House record. But nobody asks “who made House?” Before you could make a record about something, it needs to already exist. I take my inspiration from the edges and boundaries and the forgotten concepts that actually just lead to the true music, no matter what form.

Could you describe your current studio setup? What are you making music with?

In the Laboratory we combine analog equipment (synthesizers, drum machines, efx), analog mixing console, and the computer and apple devices, the ipad as a remote control. I like to make the tones with “real” things and arrange and process inside the computer.

Where did you record this podcast and what can you tell us about it?

I recorded this podcast in my studio. This is the first podcast I’ve done that is not a live recording from somewhere, so the process was really different. With no crowd or insane soundsytem to vibe off of, I feel it is a really different thing, it doesn’t really embody the experience of DJing for a crowd, the biofeedback is so crucial. So to me it is an abstract concept of DJing for an intended audience of people sitting down listening to your podcast, thinking of a dark dance environment.

I tried to make the podcast fit the season, Summer, and to be kind of relaxed, not rushed to get where it was going, but to be totally lost in the music, lost in the moment. I try to take it from very relaxed and dubby to eventually much more intense while keeping the tempo the same the whole time, doing everything with programming, ranging from proto house bleep, edge of industrial tape music, abstract acid, electro and post electro, to deep sound system techno. Also trying to reflect in sound some of the artists that have inspired me.

What are you working on at the moment?

With Interdimensional Transmissions, we have just released Erika’s debut 2xLP “Hexagon Cloud”. There is an upcoming remix record for that with a remix from Donato Dozzy and new music from her.
We are also very close to releasing an Alpha 606 LP, with a remix 12″ including mixes from Shake, Andrés and myself. There is much more going on with IT, we are working on releasing much more regularly.
We are also throwing regular events in Detroit that go til dawn, have fully transformed spaces, and audiophile sound systems. There is cult that has developed for that, and we are getting very good crowds for these parties.
Also, I have recently moved and created a new studio and am working on music on a very regular basis, also new collaborations.

This fall we are launching a Techno sub label called Eye Teeth. The first record will be by Israel Vines, and the second record will feature him being remixed by Silent Servant and myself.

Who/what is your biggest inspiration?

Lust for knowledge, endless curiosity, my dreams.
