Zak Khutoretsky comincia a seminare panico nel Midwest a partire dagli anni ’90 per poi arrivare alla produzione attraverso lo pseudonimo DVS1 con un battesimo di fuoco come “Love Under Pressure” pubblicato nientemeno che dalla Transmat Records (Leggi alla voce Derrick May). Chi ha ascoltato i suoi dj set parla di un dj completo, tecnica e senso del ritmo a livelli stellari. Per electronique in un set suonato in Olanda in un party insieme a Dave Clark.

Per iniziare, puoi dirci in che modo ti sei avvicinato all’arte del djing e alla produzione di musica elettronica?
Quel che mi ha fatto avvicinare alla musica è stato il destino…Qualcuno mi ha fatto ascoltare un vero dj con un vero impianto e sono stato immediatamente catturato. Mentre lo guardavo muovere manopole e puntine dentro di me pensavo al grande potere che ha questa figura, quello di poter far muovere la gente.
Sono stato anche particolarmente fortunato nell’esser cresciuto negli anni ’90, nel Midwest c’erano soundsystem assurdi! Da lì ho iniziato a fare il Dj e successivamente a produrre dei brani mai del tutto completati, fino all’incontro con Ben Klock che ha ascoltato un mio live (ne ho fatti solo 3 in vita mia) e mi ha spinto a rifinire le mie tracce.
Come definiresti/descriveresti la musica che produci e proponi?
Non ho una definizione precisa del mio suono, i migliori complimenti per la mia musica arrivano da chi mi conosce già come dj, quando infatti mi dicono che la mia musica rispecchia il mio modo di esibirmi in dj set questo mi riempie d’orgoglio. Mi sento comunque un Dj prima di tutto e questa credo rimarrà la mia occupazione principale. Amo la musica che fa muovere le gambe ma cerco sempre di lasciar spazio all’immaginazione.
Potresti descriverci il tuo studio? Con quali attrezzature produci musica?
Il mio setup è semplice in questo momento. Esso deriva da una configurazione completamente analogica che uso da anni con il mio PC con Reason 5.0 e ho recetemente aggiunto Record per espandere la mia abilità di produrre un suono finale migliore.
Io comando ogni cosa con controller esterni. Sebbene non usi più macchine analogiche, uso Reason come una di esse e il risultato è simile. Mixo tutte le tracce dal vivo e quello che sentite è praticamente una manipolazione di loop in tempo reale.
Dove hai registrato il podcast e cosa puoi dirci in merito?
Questo podcast è stato registrato durante il mio set al Doornroosje Night Club poco fuori Amsterdam. Ho suonato 2 ore prima di Dave Clarke.
Su cosa stai lavorando al momento?
Sto mettendo a punto alcune tracce, scrivendo nuova musica e completando un remix che va avanti da 8 mesi. Ho iniziato a rallentare l’attività di remix per avere del tempo per completare materiale originale. Dovrei pubblicare due dischi con materiale nuovo nei prossimi mesi, un’altro su Klockworks ed un’altro ancora per la Mote Evolver di Luke Slater (sono in ritardassimo!).

Chi/che cosa è la tua maggiore ispirazione?
Naturalmente potrei elencare una valanga di persone, ma quello che penso sia realmente stata la mia influenza maggiore è l’aver vissuto nel Midwest negli anni ’90. E’ stato un periodo dove sono successe molte grandi cose, musicali e non ed ora a guardarsi indietro ci si rende conto d’aver preso il meglio dal passato per averlo poi rimodellato a nostro piacimento.

To start out, can you tell us how you got into djing and producing electronic music?
What got me into the music was fate….Someone just brought me to witness a real DJ on a Real sound system and I was hooked! What got me into Dj’ing was watching that person and the power they had with the knobs(Dj mixer) at their finger tips.
I’m speaking of the power to move people and manipulate sound.
I was really lucky enough to witness a great DJ era(mid 90’s) in the Midwest and on huge soundsystems…all those elements got me interested in getting behind turntables.
As far as production..I had always tinkered around with writing music, but never finished anything. After Ben Klock and I met and he heard my live PA…(only done it 3 time ever) he pushed me to finish my ideas and put out music… …
How do you define/describe the music you make and play?
I don’t really have a definition, but something to think about…
The best compliment for me about my production comes from those who know me as a DJ.
When they tell me that the music I make sounds like the way I Dj…than I’ve accomplished what I should be doing.
I’m a DJ first…always will be. I’m drawn to music that is emotive..that helps paint part of a picture..but not quite the entire thing.
I like music that moves your feet but leaves enough for your imagination to go anywhere!
Could you describe your current studio setup? What are you making music with?
My set up is simple these days. It went from fully analogue years ago to using my PC with REASON 5.0 and recently adding Record as well to expand my ability to make the final outcome sound better…
I use everything with external controllers.
All though I don’t use analogue gear anymore, I use reason as if it was gear and run it similarly.
I mix all my tracks down live and what you hear is basically a live take of a simple loop with manipulation recording for a set length of time.I really just try and capture whatever mood I’m in at that moment.
Where did you record this podcast and what can you tell us about it?
This podcast was recorded in doornroosje night club outside of Amsterdam on Dec 18th 2010.
I was playing a 2 hour set opening up for Dave Clarke! It’s a bit on the peaktime end of things..
What are you working on at the moment?
just trying to stay focused and keep on track.
I’m writing more music and finishing up a string of remixes over the last 8 months that are all starting to come out. I’ve started turning down anymore remix projects in order to get some time to finish more original material.
I have 2 original releases scheduled to come in a few months.

Who/what is your biggest inspiration?
Of course I could list off tons of people…but that’s just boring.
My influence really stems from my surroundings and timing. I was HEAVILY influenced by the Midwest(US) and the 90’s….
And all the music that came through here from all over the world.
I got a chance to be a part of and witness some really amazing things…now look back and realize that we took the best of everywhere and molded it into our own unique thing!
